What is CSTA?

The standards US computer-science classrooms follow

The CSTA (Computer Science Teachers Association) Computer Science Standards describe what students should learn about computing at each grade band. Scratch STEM is built on three CSTA concepts — Algorithms & Programming (A&P) at its core, with the complete Data & Analysis (DA) strand and most of Impacts of Computing (IC) — progressing through CSTA Levels 1A → 1B → 2 across grades K–9 (ceiling: CSTA Level 2).

Standards we build on

CSTA first — with broader STEM standards informing design

Each chapter is mapped to a primary CSTA standard (A&P, DA, or IC) and to one Common Core Math standard, delivered by the Math Challenge at the end of the chapter. The wider design is also informed by the standards below.

Maths inside the coding

Every chapter also carries one Common Core Math problem

Each chapter ends with a Math Challenge: one problem built from the very blocks and numbers that chapter already put on screen, tagged to a Common Core Math standard. Students answer it as maths, not by running the code. It is practice, not a test — nothing here is scored or reported.

About this alignment. This is an internal alignment review. Every chapter outcome is mapped to a CSTA standard across the A&P, DA, and IC strands, and in July 2026 every cited identifier was cross-checked against the official CSTA K-12 Computer Science Standards, Revised 2017 text. An automated check now blocks any chapter that cites an identifier which does not exist in that standard. It shows how the curriculum is designed against the CSTA standards. It is not an endorsement, certification, or accreditation by CSTA or any other body. Standard descriptions are paraphrased; the CSTA Computer Science Standards are © the Computer Science Teachers Association (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
